Dubai: The United States and Israel — acting jointly in their attacks on Iran — are also facing heavy losses in the ongoing Middle East conflict. Officially, four U.S. aircraft have been lost in this war so far, and the radar component of a costly Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) air defense system has also been destroyed.

On Friday, the U.S. military's Central Command (CENTCOM) provided details regarding the loss of the fourth aircraft, reporting that a refueling tanker had crashed, resulting in the deaths of four of the six crew members on board. According to preliminary information, neither enemy fire nor friendly fire appears to have been a factor in the crash of this aircraft. CENTCOM states that an investigation into the incident is currently underway.

What did CENTCOM say?

Providing further details on the event, CENTCOM indicated that two aircraft were involved in the incident. The crashed aircraft (a Boeing KC-135) was participating in ongoing operations over Iran. It is a tanker aircraft designed to provide aerial refueling support to other jets while in flight. Rescue operations remain ongoing following the crash. While one aircraft went down, the second aircraft involved in the incident managed to land safely.

Was it a mid-air collision?

Videos and photographs surfacing on social media show a second U.S. aerial refueling tanker landing at Tel Aviv Airport. The rear section of this aircraft appears to have sustained damage. Consequently, several media reports have speculated that the two refueling tankers collided with each other in mid-air; this collision allegedly caused one aircraft to crash, while the other managed to execute a safe landing. However, this theory has not yet been officially confirmed. Officially, the United States has lost four aircraft in this conflict. Prior to the loss of the KC-135, three U.S. F-15 fighter jets were also shot down due to an error committed by the Qatari Air Force.

Why is the KC-135 crucial for US Air Force?

This aircraft plays a particularly vital role in the operations of the United States Air Force. Boeing's KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft possesses the capability to refuel other combat aircraft while in flight. Equipped with four turbofan engines, this aircraft can take off carrying a payload of approximately 146 tons. For the past 60 years, it has played a pivotal role in long-range U.S. military operations. These aircraft are also being utilized extensively during the conflict with Iran to extend the operational range of American aircraft.
